Do You Really Need Lead Guitar Lessons?

Do you remember the first chord you learned on the guitar? Can you recall “how” you learned it?

Was it from a diagram in a book? Did someone show it to you? Did you look it up online? Was it something you saw in a video?

The fact is, we all arrive at the same destination, but usually by very different paths. In the end, an “E” chord is an “E” chord, now matter how you slice it. Every one of us presses down the same three notes to make an open E chord – it’s just that we each learned how to press those three notes from different sources.

The same can be said for learning to play lead guitar. We all learn to play lead licks, riffs and runs within the confines of the same scales and patterns – but each of us gains that knowledge by going very different routes.

That’s because there are many factors involved in the guitar learning process. Level of talent, desire, motivation; circumstances of employment and home life, and time available to practice – all combine to make each of our learning experiences unique.

So do you really need lead guitar lessons? The answer is different for each of us.

Do you have the ability, self discipline, patience and motivation, to sit down by yourself and learn guitar leads from recordings – and grab bits and pieces of information online? If so, then the answer may be no.

If, on the other hand, you respond better to being shown how to do something – if things “sink in” better with a little personal instruction – then lead guitar lessons may be the best choice for you.
