Walk Down in D

Lesson Goals:

♦ Determine relative minor of D major
♦ Learn walk down from D to Bm
♦ Play a walk down chord progression

In this final lesson on walk downs based on the open C-A-G-E-D chords we will work on a common walk down in D major.

To determine the relative minor of D major, we can just start on a D note (on the 5th fret of the 5th string) and count down 3 frets, which will put us on the 2nd fret of the 5th string. This is a B note, so our relative minor of D major, is Bm (B minor).

To play this walk down we start by playing an open D chord. Then the tricky part. Keeping the D chord in place, stretch the 4th (pinky) finger and play the note on the 4th fret of the 5th string. This is our passing note. Also, when making the stretch with the 4th finger, use the side of the finger to mute the open 4th string so it does not sound.

Then resolve the walk down by playing a barre Bm chord at the 2nd fret. Give it a try!
