Walk Down in E

Lesson Goals:

♦ Determine relative minor of E major
♦ Learn walk down from E to C#m (or Dbm)
♦ Play a walk down chord progression

With the E major walk down we will take a slightly different approach by predominantly using barre chords.

First we determine the relative minor of E major. Since we can't count down from our open E (6th) string, we will have to go to the E note on the 7th fret of the 5th string.

When we count down 3 frets from there we land on the 4th fret of the 5th string, which is a C# or Db (C sharp or D flat) note. For purposes of this lesson we will refer to it as a C#.

So, in this case, the relative minor of E major is C#m (C sharp minor).

Let's begin this walk down by playing an E major chord in the barre position at the 7th fret. You may recall that this is an "A shape" barre chord, even though we are playing an E chord.

For this particular walk down we will just play the notes that occur on the inside four strings. In other words, the notes on the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th strings.

After playing the barre E chord, you will slide the first finger down one fret to play the passing note on the 6th fret of the 5th string, while keeping the rest of the E barre chord in place with the 3rd finger. This is a common walk down positioning when using "A" shape barre chords.

Then resolve the walk down by playing the C#m barre chord on the 4th fret. Give it a try!

Now let's do a common chord progression incorporating an E walk down.

Jam Tip!

Playing the chord progression in this lesson using almost all barre chords can be tiring on the hand. In order to get the most hand pressure possible, remember to place your thumb on the back of the guitar neck as a pivot point, instead of wrapping it over the neck. This will give your hand the maximum pressure and relieve some finger fatigue.
