Lesson 34

Lesson 34 - 5th String Notes (part 2)

Naming the Notes on the 5th String

Lesson Goals:

♦ Learn the note positions for the whole notes on the 5th string
♦ Be able to easily identify the notes using position markers

In this lesson we will learn the names of the notes on the 5th string beyond the 5th fret.

Starting from the 5th fret "D" note (where we left off in Lesson 30) we will identify the whole notes up to the 12th fret.

7th fret = E

8th fret = F (1/2 step up from "E" - remember?)

10th fret = G

12th fret = A

Big Hint! - At the 12th fret you reach "A" again (the octave of the open 5th string). At this point you simply start over as you proceed up the neck, just as though you were back at the open 5th string.

Lesson 34 Summary

Before moving on, try to work on being able to identify all the notes on the 5th string, from the open "A" all the way up to the 12th fret, without looking at the chart. We will learn very soon why this is so important.

Jam Tip!

As we learned earlier, there are no notes in between "E" and "F" and "B" and "C". Every time you encounter an "E" the next note up is always an "F". Every time you encounter a "B" the next note up is always a "C". The notes in between all the other whole notes are either sharps (#'s) or flats (b's).
